The Joy of Embracing the Journey

Nursing school can feel like a whirlwind of textbooks, clinicals, and exams—but it’s also a time to build lasting relationships, grow as a person, and gain experiences that will shape your career for years to come. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos and focus solely on reaching the finish line, but I hope to shed some light on the beauty of embracing the journey itself. I want to encourage you to lean into every opportunity that comes your way during school.

During my time in nursing school, I’ve learned that the real value doesn’t just come from mastering the content—it’s found in the moments when you step up to lead, connect with your peers, and maintain a positive mindset. In just two semesters of my program, I’ve adopted this approach, constantly seeking ways to grow in leadership, develop my skills, and form deeper connections with fellow students. Getting involved in organizations, taking chances, and cultivating a mindset of gratitude and optimism have helped me make the most of my nursing school experience—and I truly believe it can do the same for you. All it takes is one small step to set you on the path toward becoming the nurse, leader, and person you are meant to be.

Getting Involved: The Nursing Student Association (SNA)

One of the first and most impactful steps I took was joining my local Nursing Student Association (SNA). Most nursing programs have a chapter, and it can be one of the most positive and enriching parts of your academic journey. Not only do you get to build closer relationships with your cohort and faculty, but you also come together to contribute to something greater than yourself.

I was fortunate to serve as President of my LPN SNA chapter nearly ten years ago. We fundraised, supported community initiatives, and created real, practical change together. What makes SNA so special is that every student’s voice matters. It allows you to extend your compassion beyond the walls of the hospital and into your community, all while sharpening your leadership and collaboration skills in a supportive environment.

These experiences helped me grow beyond the classroom and shaped both my personal and professional development. I highly encourage you to explore your local SNA chapter—you may be surprised by how rewarding and transformative it can be.

Leadership Experience: MONSA

A major turning point in my nursing school experience came when I was elected Vice President of the Missouri Nursing Students Association (MONSA). This role has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey, and I feel incredibly blessed to serve in this capacity.

As VP, my mission has been to connect with nursing students across Missouri through social media, events, and outreach. I strive to share valuable opportunities such as workshops, conferences, job fairs, NCLEX prep sessions, and statewide nursing updates. More than anything, I want each Missouri nursing student to feel seen, heard, and appreciated—and to recognize that they are part of something much bigger than just their school.

The skills I’ve gained—time management, communication, teamwork—have translated directly into success in both clinicals and coursework. If you have the chance to get involved with MONSA or NSNA, take it. You’ll find a supportive community and endless opportunities for growth.

Leadership Experience: NSNA

As I write this, I’m attending the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) conference in Seattle, Washington—surrounded by passionate nursing students and faculty from across all 50 states. Representing the Show Me State at the national level is a true honor, and I’m reminded that this incredible opportunity began with one small decision to step up and lead back in October 2024.

NSNA is so much more than a student club—it’s a launchpad for your nursing career. Membership opens the door to a wide range of resources, including the Imprint magazine, NSNA’s official publication filled with career tips, specialty spotlights, student stories, and updates from chapters nationwide. It’s a go-to resource that keeps you informed and inspired throughout your journey.

NSNA also helps bridge the gap between nursing education and professional practice, offering discounted memberships to select specialty organizations and encouraging early professional involvement. The national conference alone is worth the membership—attending provides unmatched networking, education, and motivation.

Connecting with students and leaders from across the country has helped me realize how powerful our shared purpose is. I’ll never forget the connections I’ve made and the inspiration I’ve gained—and I’m already looking forward to next year’s conference.

Be a Learner in Every Moment: The Power of a Positive Mindset

Nursing school is demanding. Between sleepless nights, tough exams, and emotional challenges, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But one of the most powerful tools I’ve leaned on is a positive mindset and an emphasis on focusing on the journey.

Negativity can be contagious—when one student expresses doubt or stress, it often spreads. But choosing to stay optimistic, even in difficult moments, builds resilience and creates a healthier environment for everyone. A positive attitude helps you connect with peers and instructors and allows you to focus on learning and growth.

I remember a clinical rotation that felt intimidating at first. Instead of letting anxiety take over, I focused on what I could learn and how I could make a difference for my patients. That mindset shift made the experience more meaningful—and helped me build stronger relationships with both patients and staff.

Positivity doesn’t mean ignoring challenges. It means meeting them with the belief that growth is possible—and that you are capable.

Taking Chances: One Opportunity Can Change Everything

Some of the best experiences in nursing school come from stepping outside your comfort zone. Becoming VP of MONSA wasn’t something I had planned, but when the opportunity presented itself, I said yes—and it changed the course of my nursing journey.

Whether it’s applying for a leadership position, volunteering for a community event, or simply speaking up in class, taking small chances can lead to meaningful experiences. I’ve discovered new passions, met mentors, and built lasting friendships—all because I took that first leap.

Being open to growth means being open to possibility. You never know which opportunity will lead you to your next breakthrough—whether that’s a career, a connection, or a new sense of confidence.

Conclusion: Make the Most of Your Nursing School Experience

Nursing school is just a chapter in your journey—but it’s one that sets the tone for the rest of your career. By getting involved, staying positive, and taking chances, you’ll build a strong foundation not only as a nurse, but as a compassionate, capable leader.

So, here’s my advice: Don’t just survive nursing school—thrive in it. Join your local SNA, connect with MONSA and NSNA, and seek out opportunities to grow. Say yes to leadership. Say yes to connection. Say yes to yourself.

The experiences you gain now will shape your future in ways you can’t yet imagine. Take full advantage of this season—you’ll be amazed at how it transforms your life.
